The Rose Theatre Co. Composer-in-Residence

The Rose Theatre Co. Composer-in-Residence

It is so exciting to announce that I am now the new composer-in-residence for The Rose Theatre Co. in Washington D.C.

Creating signature music for The Rose’s new podcast The Rose Rhapsody is the very first commission.  The podcast will debut June 7th, 2021 and drop new episodes with new arrangements the first Monday of every month.

This vision is to create new music from the original score of Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin.  Through new arrangement and orchestration of the melodic themes, new vignettes now form a suite of new music with a deference to the iconic piece and composer.

More composing and Interview

More composing and Interview

Somehow in the midst of everything else, I've eeked out two new tunes.    One is a blues in 6/8 time and one is more arranged with a straight 8th groove.

Just this week an interview I wrote was published online with All About Jazz.

It has some biographical detail with questions and answers that dig into different aspects of my experience, approach and beliefs along with some other notes of interest.

It was a fun process without a doubt.

Release Gigs and Interview

Release Gigs and Interview

Just last September Blueprints Figure One was released with OA2 Records.

It has been received well in review and broadcast on radio and was selected as  one of the Highly Recommended New CDs for 2019 by Ed Love from  Detroit’s NPR station WDET 101.9 FM and played on his program Destination Jazz.

We played release concerts at pianoforte (Chicago) in October  and Club Bonafide (New York) in January.  This month pianoforte posted a tune from the Chicago performance called Keppard’s Kerchief which I wrote last summer, named for historical New Orleans trumpet Freddie Keppard.

Just last Friday I was featured in an interview to be broadcast on

Cool Nights Jazz, the world's most syndicated jazz show hosted by Steve Hart.

Steve interviewed me in the afternoon from New Zealand about my experiences with music and the new recording.

BLUEPRINTS Figure 1: a review by George W Harris

Just last month this thoughtful, considered review was published for my new album with Origin Records.  I so appreciate the expressions - thank you to Mr. George W. Harris!

_____________

Markus Rutz: Footprints

Trumpeter Markus Rutz creates moods that both bop and reflect on this album that mixes and matches drummers Xavier Breaker or Marcus Evans, saxist Brice Winston, pianist Adrian Ruiz, guitarist Matt Gold, conga man Heitor Garcia and bassist Marcos Varela.

Most intriguing is when the leader eschews drums altogether, deftly bopping with Varela and Ruiz on an easy “The Musicaner,” giving an aria with the pianist on “Very Marie” and the sweet “Shipmates” or stirring salsa with Garcia on “Gusto, as in Mucho.” In a more traditional setting, the team is sleek with Winston’s tenor charging forth on the post bopper “Syndrome” and West Coast Cool on “Segment.” Rutz’s horn is warm and embracing in each setting, glistening on the more Spartan themes, making the various colors and textures presented here woven like a Raphael tapestry.

My new recording was recently included on the NPR radio program Morning Edition!

The soundbite of The Musicianer is short and at the end of the the story.

The Compass is also posted as a sound clip on the story page.

This was so great. I do listen to Morning Edition and have good memories of hearing the program in the kitchen of our home while growing up.

I love this - Thank you to NPR!

We are performing as a quartet at Pete Miller’s Steak & Seafood in Evanston, Illinois.

The gigs feature pianists Richard Johnson (Friday) & Kevin O’Connell (Saturday) along with Neil Hemphill on drums!

I've also written two new tunes which we will perform for the first time this weekend!

Markus Rutz Composition

In October at Winter's Jazz Club in the Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago, a new tune was debuted with a trio ensemble for a gig at this remarkable new club.

The theme and thoughts I had when composing it were that of friendships.

It's title - Shipmates - is in reference and deference to at least two great musical and personal friendships.

In attendance at the Jazz Showcase for performances jazz saxophone legend  Benny Golson, we in the audience hear the true warmth of expression for his friend Clifford Brown.  This was an inspiration in writing and in a very indirect way the piece is illusory to Benny's tune Stablemates.

Another spiritual force is drummer Brian Blade and his ensemble The Fellowship.  Each member of the group and the collective connectedness of expression has been an influence for and inspiration in writing.  In particular, Brian and Christopher Thomas as friends, bandmates and members of the rhythm section for this group exhibit what this song is about.
